Plaid Deer Baby Quilt

I know at lot of couples that are expecting babies soon!  That means I get to make lots of baby quilts!  I love making baby quilt because they usually come together pretty quickly and I can use my small machine to do the quilting. This quilt I made for my little niece or nephew!
If you haven't seen my last baby quilt you can find it here!

This quilt was inspired by buffalo plaid design, but I simply did a 3 color diagonal stripe plaid.  For the back I used this flannel print that I found at Joann fabrics.
To add some interest to the quilt top I appliqued a deer head popping up in the corner to match the backing fabric.
To make this quilt you will need:
  • 1/2 yard of red cotton
  • 1/2 yard of black cotton
  • 1/2 yard of grey cotton
  • 1 yard of burgandy cotton
  • 1 yard of flannel for the back
  • 19" by 18" piece of tan cotton for deer
  • 1 yard of batting
  • Matching thread
  • Deer applique template (print so the blue square is 2")
  • Invisible thread
Directions:
  1.  Cut 36 squares each out of your red, black, and gray fabrics that measure 4 1/2 inches.  You should have 108 squares total.
  2. Sew squares together in a plaid pattern using a 1/4 inch seam.  Press seams open.
  3. Trace the deer onto freezer paper.  Cut out and press onto the back of your tan fabric.  Cut out 1/4 inch around the edge clipping curves and trimming corners.  Press edges over 1/4 inch.
  4. Pin deer on the bottom corner of the plaid piece and sew in place using invisible thread and a small zig-zag stitch.
  5. Cut enough strips that measure 3 1/2 inches wide to make a border around your plaid piece.  Sew strips on the sides of you quilt and trim any excess off the edges, press seams toward the border.
  6. Sew border pieces across the top and bottom of the quilt and trim any excess off the ends, press seams toward the border.
  7. Layer your quilt back, batting, and quilt top together and pin or baste together.
  8. Quilt as desired.  I quilted around the deer and then I sewed diagonal lines through the center of the squares and finished by sewing around the border.
  9. Trim edges of you quilt and bind.  I used the border fabric to make binding.  (If you would like to learn how to make binding yourself click here)

I apologize for the lack of pictures in this tutorial, I neglected to take pictures while I was in the process of making it.  However if you have made quilts in the past this one should be pretty simple.  This is not meant to be a learn-to-quilt tutorial anyway so if you have experience you shouls be able to figure it out!
